Title: Snake of Temptation
Size: 45.72cm. Medium: Found Object March 2016 Exhibition Text:
The main theme of this found object piece, was temptation. The piece is based off of the story in the Bible about Adam and Eve and their encounter with the snake. The snake in the story became a symbol of temptation and poisonous. |
Artistic Inspiration:
The main inspiration for my Organic vs. Industrial art piece, was the story of Adam and Eve in the Bible. I'm very religious and I wanted to incorporate some kind of religious aspect into this piece, especially since I found the idea of making a snake out of industrial materials. The story of Adam and Eve is a very interesting story in the sense that it involves the curiosity and search of adventure for humans, and the snake in this story as evil. The snake also represents the devil's works and creations such as temptation and other behaviors such as temptation. My other inspiration for this piece was Oscar Spencer who carved a snake out of wood, and used acrylic paint to create the detail on the snake.

Process:
The sketch to the left was my final sketch that combined all of my ideas together. The main thing that I concentrated on during each sketch was the materials that I could use that are "industrial" or "man-made." I also made sure that the possible list of materials were easily accessible to me. I wanted to keep the structure of the snake basic, to allow for a clearer understanding of the shape and form of the snake. I wanted to use industrial objects to give the sense of danger that temptation can bring. I mainly wanted to focus on the meaning in the story of Adam and Eve in the Bible.
|
In my structure of the snake, I wanted to only do the skeleton of the snake to give a deeper meaning of the "evil" that the snake has in the story of Adam and Eve. For the structure of the snake, the spinal cord I used the metal spiral backing on notebooks and some sketch books. I used this because it represented the spinal cord, and the curved ribs like what an actual snake has.

The image to the left is the head of my structure/snake. I found this object from a soap bottle, and it has a similar structure of a snake head. I then incorporated this into my snake to had a diversity of industrial found objects that I used. The image that is to the right of the previously mentioned image, is the structure put together without the tail, and any detail to the body. Attaching the head and the rest of the body was challenging. I had to take the rings, and tighten them on the slim part of the soap bottle nozzle. It was challenging because there were several possible ways to attach everything together, but in the end most of them failed. The only method that didn't fail was the final attempt of attachment.

Reflection:
Overall, my organic vs. industrial sculpture was efficient in displaying a unique meaning. Especially with the context of the story of Adam and Eve which I based it off of. There were both successes and struggles throughout the process. Some of the successes were one being the attachment of the structure to symbolize a snake. The second success is the overall connection of the sculpture. I think that the connections that I made throughout the piece were strong, and it provides a unique style that is presented by the sculpture. Some of my failures were one being the attachment process of the structure. It took several different methods to effectively attach the head and body together. Another challenge in general was creating the structure to actually symbolize a snake. I overcame my struggles to present a sculpture made out of industrial objects to form an organic object and display a connection which was the whole goal of the project.
