Artistic Inspiration: My artistic inspiration is Hugh Ferris. Hugh Ferris was an architectural illustrator. The common thing that I was inspired by in his architectural illustrations is his use of different structures to incorporate a more futuristic appeal to a landscape. A huge application that was significant in his illustrations but also to the viewer's eyes was the point of perspective that he specifically focuses on in each illustration. I also was inspired by the way Ferris experiments with the lighting and illumination of the landscape, which allows for a unique contrast.

Exhibition Text: This landscape is a more futuristic landscape, and it incorporates shapes and structures that can be seen throughout cities. The balance but diverse nature of the application of buildings changes the illumination of the whole landscape.

Process:
For my Urban Landscape I used foam core as my base, which actually produced a decent solid base for the weight of my landscape. I wanted to make sure that the foam core could actually support the weight of the blocks in whichever design or layout I created. Through the design and layout process, I gathered several different variations of blocks to layout a variety of different possible ideas. My goal was to create a some what futuristic landscape that incorporated modern landscape ideas and concepts. I developed several different landscape concepts to naturally change the illumination of the light source that it being produced from the base. The goal of the landscape was to observe the effect that the blocks have on that specific light source, and how the order of the blocks impacts the overall landscape through the use of illumination. I specifically focused on centralizing my landscape designs around the light source, to allow for an effect on the light source of the blocks. I based my final landscape on combinations of several other layouts that I composed throughout the whole process of creating a landscape. I wanted my landscape to effectively capture, and naturally change the light source illumination on the buildings. Throughout each design and layout, I took multiple pictures to capture different perspectives of how the buildings effect the whole illumination of the landscape.

For my Urban Landscape, I wanted to incorporate the landscapes of cities such as Chicago and New York. I found both the city scenes and especially the contrast in shapes of the buildings and different structures aesthetically pleasing. I liked the fact that with these shapes and forms, that it would interesting to manipulate their appearance in a landscape to create an aesthetically pleasing scene. I wanted to manipulate these shapes and forms to give a more complex feel, and display how large cities tend to have more buildings that are centralized throughout the landscape. Based off of my use of centralizing my shapes and forms in my landscape, I wanted to create and represent a Times Square or Central Park look, because when looking at those areas in New York, every building and structure is in a centralized position. In my final landscape, there are two structures crossing along through the landscape. These represent the subway lines, or even possible highway paths. This element from my design was inspired by the subway and highway paths of Chicago. I wanted to basically create a simple, but also complex landscape that specifically incorporated the shapes and forms of both New York and Chicago. Both of these cities are famous throughout the world, and represent how a society can be both so busy and messy (Traffic Jams), but also how the society works together to become a beautiful well-balanced machine.
Reflection:
Throughout the process of creating my Urban Landscape, I overcame several obstacles and replaced them with finished success toward the goals that were expected throughout the project, but also my own personal goals and standards. One of my difficulties that I overcame was both an Artist inspiration and a cultural inspiration. For my artist inspiration, I was trying to find an artist that created architectural pieces that displayed a landscape that I would be interested in working with. That Artist that I found my inspiration from was Hugh Ferris. For my cultural inspiration, it was another difficult objective because I wanted to focus on cities that had a similar landscape and style that could be incorporated into my urban landscape ideas. The two cities that I came to my cultural inspiration were New York, and Chicago. Both of these cities represented the types of shapes and forms that I wanted to incorporate into my landscape. At the end for my final landscape, it effectively gives a sense of some of the elements of both cities that I incorporated into my landscape, which was important to me because it would allow for some connections toward modern society in cities.
