Title: Baseball Stadium
Size: 22.9cm x 30.5cm. Medium: Graphite on Sketch Paper November 2016 Exhibition Text: For this piece I wanted to focus on Architecture, but incorporate stadium designs for a baseball stadium. My artist inspiration for this stadium was Frank Lloyd Wright. I focused on incorporating Wright's philosophy and style of architecture which was "Organic Architecture." I wanted to design the stadium to match the scenery in Milwaukee. Artist Inspiration: My artist inspiration for my stadium design, is Frank Lloyd Wright. His style of designing buildings is known as "Organic Architecture." The concept of this philosophy is that the building should develop out of the nature surrounding it. Through his philosophy, his architecture displayed originality in his designs, and provided new ideas in the architectural community. His architectural form was determined by the function of the building, environment, and the materials that were being used to construct the form. The architectural design that I was inspired the most by was "Fallingwater" by Frank Lloyd Wright. This design incorporates the house build in a waterfall, which allows for organic materials and industrial materials to interact, and it allows for both materials to work in harmony. |
Process:
My first stadium design incorporated line and form, and it replicates the structures of the buildings in downtown Milwaukee. I focused on Frank Lloyd Wright's philosophy of Organic Architecture, but incorporated it into the scenery of downtown Milwaukee, to design a baseball stadium that would work with the environment around it in downtown Milwaukee. I focused on manipulating the possible seating arrangments to view a game in this stadium design. I also manipulated the shape of the outfield fence and the distance from home plate they would be, but following the stadium dimension regulatons that are set by Major League Baseball (MLB).

The sketch to the right is my second stadium design that I considered to add in my final stadium design. I again focused on Organic Architecture and incorporating the environment and structures that downtown Milwaukee has. In this design I incorporated more curved lines in the seating levels to replicate some of the buildings by the lakefront of Lake Michigan such as the form of the Calatrava and the Discovery World building. I though still incorporated the linear forms that the buildings provide, and replicate their form to an extent.

The two sketches above are my final designs for my final stadium. The picture above and to the left is the above view of the overall form and structure that would be presented by this stadium design. The sketch to the right is the inside view of the stadium, which provides some perspective and three-dimensional qualities to see the designed forms within the stadium. Once again I focused and incorporated Organic Architectre, but combined my previous two process designs to capture the city of Milwaukee as a whole, which allows for more interpretation of the possible qualities that the stadium design represents in the environmental context of where the stadium is located in the city. I incorporated and manipulated levels of seating above others to display structural support to an extent that is visual in the inside perspective of the stadim which is above to the right.
ACT Questions:
My inspiration was Frank Lloyd Wright and I was inspired through his vision and philosophy of architecture was based on "Organic Architecture." I incorporated his organic architectural concepts in my stadium designs to make the stadiums portray aspects of Milwaukee, such as the industrial forms and shapes that are used widely around the city. Frank Lloyd Wright's organic architecture was unique in the way that he incorporated industrial materials toward more natural landscapes throughout the nation. Wright found a harmony between a contrasting of the types of materials used with the natural and organic components of an area. Frank Lloyd Wright wanted to connect nature and industrialization with society to appreciate the aesthetic qualities that nature displays. He incorporated industrial materials to also create a balance of the materials he used but to also use them to create new aesthetic qualities throughout his work. The central idea from my inspirational research was finding and creating aesthetic qualities throughout the use of industrialized and organic materials. The central idea also was to suggest the harmony that the combination of these materials provided in a natural or industrial landscape. The inferences that can be concluded through the research is that Frank Lloyd Wright formulated a new technique of architecture that involved natural and industrial materials. Wright pioneered a new form of architecture and designed several unique buildings and structures that coordinate with the environment.
Reflection:
In this baseball stadium design that I created, I think that I incorporated Frank Lloyd Wright's philosophy of Organic Architecture to an extent. My main focus was completing a design that captured the forms and structural qualities of buildings that are notable in the entire city of Milwaukee. This incorporation is significant based off of the modernizing architecture, and the rich polish and german cultural history in Wisconsin as a whole. The scenery of the architecture in the city especially in downtown Milwaukee is modernizing and is suggesting a futuristic type of structural design. I wanted to focus on the environment and scenery of Milwaukee, and incorporate all of the development and forms to create a baseball stadium that depicts these visual and structural qualities throughout the city.
